Management Cone

The Management Cone, formally the Administration Cone, deals with the human, physical, and financial resources of an embassy. You would be in charge of the motor pool and housing. Some assignments have millions of dollars worth of real estate that you would be in charge of as well as multimillion dollar budgets.

Having experience in the private sector would definitely help in doing this job. Alternatively you could boast managing these million dollar budgets and properties on a resume if you ever decided to enter the private sector.

Management Officers keep the embassies running. They may not have as much involvement in foreign policy as other tracks, but they are still very important to the success of the mission.

When the Secretary of State or other high ranking officials visit you would be in charge of coordinating and planning their visit.

First tour MOs work as Assistant General Service Officers and could have 50-70 employees working for them. Then they would become GSOs themselves. Head of Management at an embassy is the Management Counselor.

Make sure you are ready to take on this level of responsibility before choosing this track. Although a bit long I suggest reading "Reframing the Conversation on Management" it speaks a lot about the role of management in the State Department, the link can be found below.
